The Young Teacher’s Guide To Using Technology In The Class Room

You, as an inexperienced teacher, should begin with simple technology, slowly. You need to adopt the ‘KISS’ principle, i.e. ‘Keep it simple, stupid.’ Keep away from the ‘complicated teaching aids’ that the more advanced technology represents.

That said, it is important to realise that no form of technology is the ‘be all and end all’ for a teacher. A teacher needs to be flexible and gain experience in all forms of technology to add interest and real life data as well as efficiency to their teaching.

Some teachers make the mistake of believing that technology replaces the humble chalk/white board. No technology can replace them totally because they are quick and easy to use and can be very effective in the hands of an experienced teacher.

As you begin your career, use only one form of technology at a time, apart from the chalk or white boards. Plan carefully what you need to do. Practice beforehand. Make sure you have all the parts you need to make the technology work, e.g. a remote control. Check that it works and the batteries are fresh.

Here are a number of guidelines to be aware of before you begin to use any form of technology in your class room.

1. Always test your equipment/technology first to ensure that it works.

2. Practice its use before the lesson.

3. Remember: You must still do the teaching. Technology does not teach. It simply assists the process of teaching/learning.

4. Make sure all students gain equal access to whatever technology you use.

5. Ensure that all students who need to use the technology can use it effectively and as efficiently as possible.

6. If you use technology as a medium in your assessment, make sure the success in the task is not dependent on the students’ expertise in using the technology.

7. Before you use any technology as part of your assessment task, make sure all students have practiced and perfected the technological skills they need to succeed in the task, given that they know the appropriate learning work.

8. Develop an expertise in using all available technology in your class room. This will give you opportunities to use a greater variety of teaching strategies/pedagogues.

9. Always plan a back-up strategy if the technology fails, i.e. Have spare devices or an alternative teaching strategy.

10. Where you have competent students with technology skills, use them to assist you as demonstrators or as mentors for their fellow students.

11. When seeking to acquire new technology, be sure to investigate the real cost including the ‘behind the scenes’ costs such as servicing, as well as the benefits to your students. Ask yourself this question: “Does it offer a better teaching result than the other already available strategies and old technology?” before you spend the money.

One last point:

Remember the technology cannot do your teaching for you. In the end, the technology, even with the powerful interactive computer software now available, will need your input somewhere for it to be truly effective for your students.

Health Education – Know Medical Equipment Types

Without a doubt, medical professionals working in hospitals, offices and other health facilities heavily depend on medical equipment in caring for their patients. As such tools are fundamental to perform their job duties, it is best to be aware that there are different types of medical equipment. Ranging from x-ray machines to heart monitor equipments, all take part in just as an important responsibility in patient care as the doctor, nurse or technician who uses them.

Diagnostic medical equipment is a scientific kind of equipment used in the early process of health care which is diagnosis stage. Such instruments embrace ultrasound machines, magnetic resonance imaging, computer-assisted tomography, and x-ray machines.

Therapeutic medical tools instrumentation, which aids in healing, is also known as life support equipments. Such machines include infusion pumps, lasers, and LASIK surgical machines. These kind of medical instruments maintain bodily functions when patients’ body can no longer perform these functions on their own. Such life support machines also include heart-lung machines, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), dialysis machines and ventilators.

Medical monitoring instruments are crucial as medical staff use these to constantly monitor a patient’s medical state. Such equipments include the electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and blood pressure.

Another critical type of medical equipment is the automated medical laboratory equipment. Such tools are used to analyze blood, urine, and genes samples. These instruments available to hospitals, physician offices, and laboratories are made available through the research of diagnostic corporations.

Nowadays, many companies are involved in providing these different types of hospital equipment. It is a booming business as hospital equipments like catheters; stomach tube, rubber sheets, surgical rubber bulbs, etc. are commonly used.

Nonetheless it is an imperative that all suppliers strictly comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act whatever kind of medical equipment they provide. This is essentially to protect patients’ privacy and records.

Why Social Media is Important For Small Businesses!

Business is changing and the internet and social media offer opportunities only dreamed of years ago. Businesses are backing off aggressive advertising campaigns in favor of directly connecting with their customers and the general public. Small businesses really benefit from social advertising, which expose you to a worldwide audience at very little cost.

It’s important to become involved in social media both for exposure and to interact with your customers. Twitter and Facebook have many businesses, big and small, that use that media to provide customer service, product education and to forge a more personal link with their clients.

When you interact with people on social media sites you can get immediate feedback on your products, the way you do business and even your employees. Since social media is fast becoming a daily part of our lives, maintaining an online presence can be a very cost effective way to put your business out there where people can see it.

The secret to a successful social media presence is to put your product aside and interact with people. They already know you own a business and they can familiarize themselves with your product through your website. What your website can’t do is put a human face and personality forward. In this impersonal world, people are more apt to do business with someone they know than a stranger. When you interact with the public through Facebook, Twitter or other sites you become human and accessible.

Social media also allows you to speak directly to your customers. Many large companies are now parking their customer service departments on Facebook and Twitter for good reason; people are increasingly impatient with long waits and time consuming attempts to get hold of someone to help them. Being available on social media lets them contact someone immediately-instant gratification!

Social media will also allow you to answer questions about your product, educate people on how to use it or keep them advised of new uses and developments in the field. Some very successful entrepreneurs use social media sites to talk less about their product and concentrate on helping the people know the company and its people. For instance, you can twitter about a cause you care about and link to a relevant website. The people who support that cause will give you their business because they feel a kinship with you.

You’ll also be able to find out what people think of your business and your product or service. People will often post a message on the internet when they would not call on the telephone or write a letter or email. Knowing how the public views your business will clue you in on what you’re doing right, things you should change and what you should do more of.

Twitter can be used to advertise your brand to a world-wide audience. Not only that but your twitter username will appear in search engines and gain you even more exposure. Sites like Yelp let you create a local listing for your business so people can find you. Local social networks like this are great for business. And businesses in North Georgia and Western North Carolina are no different. Businesses in these areas from Murphy, NC to Cartersville, GA, Blairsville, GA, Gainesville, GA, and everywhere in-between should be taking advantage of these social media outlets. There are companies that can help you with your social media in North Georgia and Western North Carolina. Find one you like and have them help you with your social media campaign.

The Homeschool Classroom – Bulk Purchasing

One of the most common fears of a new or prospective homeschooling mom is MONEY.

“We have a one-income family. How can we afford to homeschool? How do I spend less money, but maintain high quality? I don’t want to be broke during the entire span of my children’s educational years.”

Thankfully, there are options.

Given the enormous amount of public funds that are shelled out day after day in traditional school establishments, one would think the task of thrifty shopping is impossible when it comes to brand-new or high-quality homeschool curriculum. Fortunately for penny-pinching homeschoolers, there are many ways to continue offering your children a high-quality education without breaking the bank. My most favorite option for saving bucks is buying in bulk — just like the major big-box retailers – and school districts — do.

It is common practice in the business place to offer product discounts when the wholesaler purchases in high quantity. You understand the concept of Costco, right? The more you buy, the more you save. Storing extra paper towels, napkins, and canned goods is no problem — you know you’ll eventually use them. But, for homeschoolers, it’s not always that simple when it comes to books, DVDs, and pencils. Unfortunately, homeschoolers typically only need one, maybe two copies of any given particular book title, workbook, or paintbrush.

I’ve found some great bargains at bulk purchase warehouses such as nationally known Costco and the Wal-Mart owned, Sam’s Club. Great library additions can be had at substantial savings such as reference items like atlases, maps and globes; classic book titles packaged in 6-packs, and wonderful how-to books like cookbooks, gardening, knitting, sewing, chess, foreign language, and more. A savvy shopper can even unearth an educational resource gem like the Core Knowledge series by E.D. Hirsch, (“What Your Kindergartner Needs To Know, What Your First Grader Needs To Know”, etc.) amongst the Costco book tables. These items can be found at retail bookstores at much higher prices.

Another opportunity to bulk-buy purchase is by teaming up with a few local moms and then approaching the vendor directly with a large quantity order. If a vendor is already open to the idea of bulk purchase discounts to the general public, they will sometimes post the special pricing on their website, as well. Some extra research clicking and digging can save you a bundle in the long run. The down side to this is that there is also extra time, energy, organizational skills, money collections, delivery errands, and more effort involved. If you’re only teaching one kindergartener, this may be right up your alley; but, if you’re like most homeschoolers, you have multiple children, multiple teaching, multiple homework checking, multiple events to taxi the children to, multiple errands to run, multiple housecleaning chores… and the list goes on.

Fortunately, for the overloaded mom, there’s another option available — an online homeschool community organization called The Homeschool Buyer’s Co-op. This organization offers free membership to any bonafide homeschooler, and exists to negotiate bulk pricing on behalf of homeschoolers. They take care of all the heavy-lifting. Moms like you and me, need only visit their website, browse the choices, and pick the “group” purchases that we want to be a part of. There are other homeschool curriculum purchasing cooperatives available, but they only work with traditional school systems. The Homeschool Buyer’s Co-op is the only one I’m aware of that caters specifically to homeschoolers’ needs.

Why pay more, when you don’t have to? Next time you find yourself already at Costco getting the groceries, make a point to swing by the book tables. You’ll surely find something to enhance the learning at home and you’ll certainly NOT pay retail. If you’ve got the free time to organize your own private bulk purchase with some of your local pals, then I suggest you get busy. There’s no reason to keep spending extra dollars unnecessarily. If finding spare time is not an easy task for you, then why spend those precious family minutes on the phone collecting orders and payments from other moms? If there’s an easily accessible, online, program available already doing all the legwork, then pour yourself a cup of tea, grab the computer mouse and click-buy-and-save.

No matter which option you choose, I highly recommend tapping into bulk purchasing power for your Homeschool classroom. The bottom line is this – you have to spend – you might as well spend wisely.

Things to Consider When Homeschooling Your Children

Homeschooling families are increasing in number and the reasons that lead families into homeschooling vary. But several things remain true. When you have decided to homeschool, there are a few things to keep in mind and periodically consider when you take on this role for your children. If you are just getting started, you might want to read a related article, “Six Things You Need To Start Homeschooling,” but for the veteran, it’s always good to reassess your role from time to time. Some of these things to consider are for your kids, and some of them are for you, but frequently consider the following factors when homeschooling your children.

  1. Are you focusing on core academic subjects so that your children are growing in knowledge and readiness to perform at the next level? Be sure that you don’t get “lost” in the wealth of options available to homeschool families for supplemental courses or activities. Outside agencies, whether higher level schools or standardized testing services are able to validate your homeschool program in the areas of math, sciences, language arts, etc. Focus on these core subject areas when you homeschool, before you add in the extras, and keep track of how your children are scoring on these types of outside validation tests. You should be seeing steady, upward growth.
  2. Are you looking for ways to keep your children engaged and participating in the community around them? Homeschool families have an incredible opportunity to get out into their communities and learn the value of citizenship in a unique way. When the school day is over or even worked into the school day through unit studies and projects, allow your children to represent themselves, and homeschooling, to those who can most benefit from seeing the positives first hand – your neighbors and surrounding businesses. Consider adopting a local business and letting your children serve by maintaining their grounds, supporting their company, or finding ways to serve them. It’s an unusual gift that homeschoolers can offer, and it creates long-term relationships in the community.
  3. Are you getting counsel for those subject areas that need extra help or accountability, and are you staying on track for graduation goals? Often the answers to these questions can be easily solved by getting the appropriate outside counsel on your homeschool program from time to time. That may mean a homeschool coach or it might mean making sure that you spend time with homeschoolers you know who have been successful getting their homeschool children through high school and into college. Whichever route you choose, get outside counsel and evaluation on your homeschooling program on a regular basis.
  4. And finally, for the primary educator in the homeschool, are you getting some free time of your own, away from the role of educator? You will find that it is hard not to think of the next project, assignment, upcoming lesson, etc. and that your mind tends to be on “school” all the time as a homeschool mom or dad. Be sure that you are getting some free time to clear your head and some time to refresh your spirit. Consider the old adage that you can only freely give away what you have stored up. If you are “spent” and fatigued due to lack of rest, you will have nothing left to give!

Homeschooling is a great honor and privilege. Consider frequently how you are doing, and what, if anything needs to be adjusted along the way to keep your children thriving in knowledge, on solid footing academically, and your homeschool program robust, healthy, and successful!

Overnight Backpack – A Large But Reasonably Sized Backpack

For camping trips that are going to last two days it helps to bring a backpack that is going to be relatively large but not too big. In this case an overnight backpack can be used. This is a large backpack that is helpful for camping trips but is not going to be too large. It is one of the best types of large backpacks to consider for any camping trip.

An overnight backpack is a type of backpack that is about two thousand to three thousand cubic inches in size and can weight between three to five pounds on average. This is smaller than that of backpacks that are used for weekend trips but it is larger than that of standard backpacks that are used for day-long outdoor trips. With this reasonable size it can be a great material to use for a camping trip that takes two days.

One of the best parts about these large backpacks is that many of them include various straps that help to keep them handled properly when hiking outdoors. In additional to shoulder straps a standard one of these large backpacks will have a hip belt that can be used to help with keeping the backpack stable on one’s back so that it will be easier to carry the backpack without getting all of the materials shaken up inside of the backpack or having the backpack continuously hit the person who is carrying it in the back.

Gear loops are common features among these backpacks. These are loops that are on the back of the backpack that are used to help with storing gear that may be too large or sharp to fit on the inside of the backpack. An ice axe can be stored inside of these gear loops.

External pockets can be used on many of these backpacks. These pockets can be ones that include sections for water bottles or global positioning system products.

Because of the overnight nature of many camping trips it helps to have an overnight backpack that is very durable. Many of these backpacks will have nylon padding that is very durable and safe for use. Others will have aluminum padding that can work on the inside of the backpack for helping to keep the inside from tearing up.

How To Find Best Online Deals When Shopping For Software

With so many comparison shopping search engines, you no longer have an excuse to buy software full price. These simple pointers will show you how to get 10-50% off practically any software or game.

Tip One – compare the price comparison engines.

The top three price comparison engines are Froogle (by Google), Yahoo!Shopping (shopping.yahoo.com) and PriceGrabber.
Froogle is the most comprehensive of the three because it does not charge merchants for their listings. The benefit of that is a a very large inventory of listings. However, sometimes this results in obscuring results. For instance, if you enter “Luxor Game” in order to search for a popular casual downloadable game by MumboJumbo, the first six listings will be totally unrelated to the product searched for. On the other hand, Froogle does usually find the best deal for software or games and posts it on the very first page, so all you have to do is to weed out irrelevant results. In this particular case, Froogle was able to find a merchant selling Luxor for $17.99

Yahoo!Shopping, on the other hand, provides more relevant results, with a proper match for “Luxor Game” in the very first position. However, Yahoo!Shopping only list products sold through Yahoo!Shops, therefore the inventory is much smaller, which decreases a chance of finding the lowest price. In this case, the best price for Luxor is $18.88, well above Froogle’s.

PriceGrabber works as a paid inclusion service, which means that its inventory of listings is smallest of the three comparison engines. However, because some large software merchants use this service, occasionally, PriceGrabber offers a rare chance fo find a really great deal. In case with “Luxor Game”, PriceGrabber matched Yahoo! at $18.88, which is still below Froogle’s results.

Tip Two – search only for downloadable versions.

Even though you may find very good prices through Froogle, Yahoo!Shopping or PriceGrabber, a vast majority of the merchants sell boxed versions of software that need to be shipped. These shipping charges often increase the price of software by three to five dollars, which is quite significant for software that may cost only twenty dollars or less. Solution? Buy downloadables version.

The two best places to go for downloadable software are Download.Com (a CNET site) and Deprice.Com. CNET’s Download.Com is not a price comparison search engine. However, it lists over 50000 software and game titles that can be downloaded and bought online. The prices are listed right below the date software was added.

Deprice.Com is a specialized website that list only discounted and only downloadable software. It’s searchable database contains only 14000 listings, which is not large enough to cover all popular software, but is still worth the search.
